Dardanus, by legend the founder of Cortona and more famously Troy, is supposed to have lost his helmet (in Greek corythos - also the root of the name Cortona) here during a battle with the locals. The area was for a long time a stronghold of the Etruscans and has a wealth of archeological and cultural remains to discover during your holiday. Here too you will find ample evidence of Roman, mediæval and Renaissance influences.
The old centre of Cortona, saved from over-development by its mediæval walls, is a lovely place to explore on foot — with excellent restaurants and shops, museums, churches and a Medici fortress. The city centre is an easy, pleasant walk of about a kilometre from the hotel. The area also has some outstanding trails for horseriding, walking or cycling, and guided excursions are available by arrangement. |
