The present palace was originally a fortified castle, which had been built on the ruins of a roman fortress from 300 A. D. In 1678 the ruined castle was demolished and the building underwent a major restoration following the style of the famous architect Galeazzo Alessi. At the beginning of the twentieth century the Villa became a Grand Hotel and lodged some nobles such as the prince of Wied and in 1904 the Queen Margaret of Savoy.
