Located at only two hour’s drive from the city of Venice, Trieste is a city and seaport in northeastern Italy and the capital of Friuli Venezia Giulia. It is situated towards the end of a narrow strip of land lying between the Adriatic Sea and the Italian/Slovenian border. Trieste is located at the head of the Gulf of Trieste, and throughout history, it has been influenced by its location at the crossroads of Germanic, Latin, Austro-Hungarian and Slavic cultures.
More than Rome, Florence, and Milan, this border city perfectly represents the Italian “turbulent past” and was always point of contention between different nations because of its strategic importance.
Charming glares at the sea and fascinating history
Founded by the Romans to protect Aquileia (fourth most crucial Roman city), Trieste was one of the oldest parts of the Habsburg Monarchy from 1382 until 1918. In the 19th century, it was the most important port of one of the Great Powers of Europe. As a prosperous seaport in the Mediterranean region, Trieste became the fourth largest city of the Austro-Hungarian Empire (after Vienna, Budapest, and Prague). Trieste came under Italian rule at the beginning of the 20th century, and yet its colorful past is still apparent in its architecture and population, an actual “ethnical mosaic” creating a marvelous, matchless culture.
At the end of the XX century, Trieste emerged as an essential hub for literature and music. It is in fact in Trieste that the essential Irish writer James Joyce began writing some tales that were to become part of “Dubliners” and, most important, it is where Joyce met Italo Svevo, primary model for his Ulysses’ Leopold Bloom.
To remember this illustrious citizen, in Trieste was built a statue, that is located minutes away from the charming Piazza Unità (Unity Square), the biggest square giving directly onto the sea in Europe!
